Arvel Spease Hensley

Mr. Arvel Spease Hensley, 82, passed away unexpectedly on August 13, 2012. He was born February 8, 1930 in Forsyth County to the late Fred Franklin Hensley and Grace McHargue Hensley. He worked at R.J. Reynolds prior to entering the U.S. Army and later worked for Southland Insurance Company before returning to his military career. He retired as Colonel after serving in Vietnam, Korea, Germany and later at the Pentagon. While serving in the U.S. Army he received his Masters degree from the University of Omaha. After his retirement he moved to Satellite Beach Florida where he enjoyed spending his days fishing. In 2008 he returned to Winston-Salem where he spent his time gardening and was an avid Beekeeper. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olene Bennett Hensley in 2005. He was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Dorotha Carter and Ella Frye, and two brothers-in-law, Elwin Bennett and Raymond Frye. Mr. Hensley is survived by his sister, Brenda Anderson and husband Grady; a brother, Marvin Hensley and wife Mary Elizabeth; nieces and nephews, Beverly Carter, Pamela Blanc, Stephen Frye, Keith Carter, Michael Carter, Joyce Cobb, Connie Steinberg, Debbie Wilson, Sonya Kellar, Phillip Barton, Donna Wishon, Robert Bennett, and Norma Weekman. He is also survived by his special black poodle, Black Dog ""Lucky"". A funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Harmony Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Freeman officiating. Graveside services will follow at 1:00pm at Friendship Baptist Church, 1352 South Friendship Rd, Germanton, NC 27019. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm On Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Harmony Grove United Methodist Church, 5041 Styers Ferry Rd., Lewisville, NC 27023.
