Arthur Joseph McGrane, 99, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 1, 2021 at his residence in Homestead Hills Skilled Nursing of Covid complications. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1921 to Joseph and Estelle Foulon McGrane. While attending Duke University, he met and married Rosalie Grayson Williams McGrane in 1944. She preceded him in death in 1960. He later married Patricia Gannaway McGrane, and she preceded him in death in 1994. He is survived by 2 daughters: Margaret (John) Miller of Charlotte N.C., and Rosalie Simmons of Boone, N.C; a son Joe McGrane a stepson Bob Gannaway, both of Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Ed Gannaway in 1995, a grandson, Joe Miller in 2020, and a great granddaughter, Alexis McGrane in 2008.Surviving also are six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Arthur was a pilot of a B-25 Bomber in the Pacific Theater during WW II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart medals for his service. After the war, he returned to Duke University and graduated from the School of Engineering in 1947. He and Rosalie moved to Winston-Salem where he spent his professional career with R. J. Reynolds. He was a founding member of St Timothy's Episcopal Church and a big supporter of the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. He was always there for his family, a good man. He laid out life's lessons simply with talk of compassion, honor, and duty, whispered without exaggeration. A family only " Celebration of Life" Service will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church.
