Mr. Arthur Lester Garner, 86, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Tuesday July 19, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Garner was born on February 9, 1925 in Randolph County, NC to the late Conrad and Mary Garner. Mr. Garner proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. He graduated from boot camp in Bainbridge, MD prior to going overseas to fight in World War II where he served as a Ship Serviceman on the U.S.S. Weeks. He took part in battles in Tokyo Bay, Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Hiroshima. He received a purple heart for his courageous acts that saved many of his serviceman's lives. After completing his service to his country, Arthur spent 20 years of his working career as a truck driver where he drove 14 of those years for Pilot Freight Carriers. Mr. Garner also spent over 30 years working as a used car salesman where he met and gained many friends. He was a big fan of many sports but truly enjoyed NASCAR, football and baseball. He was a big fan of Dale Earnhardt, the Washington Redskins and the New York Yankees. Preceding Mr. Garner in death along with his parents are three brothers, Reitzel, Conrad and Rupert Garner; a sister, Marcella Garner Bowden and a special lifelong friend, Robert Sapp. Surviving Mr. Garner are a brother, Robert ""Bob"" Garner of Winston-Salem; a sister, Georgia James Garner of Winston-Salem; special friends, Ruby Sapp, Pamela Sapp and Tammy Parks; a special nephew, Doug Garner and many other nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 11:00 am at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Charlie McFrederick officiating. Burial will follow the service at Union Ridge United Methodist Church with full military honors. A visitation will be held from 7:00PM until 9:00 PM on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
