Arthur Eugene Atkinson

Mr. Arthur Eugene Atkinson, 90, passed away on Monday, Feb. 27, 2017 at NC Veterans' Home in Salisbury. Arthur was born on April 10, 1926 to Margaret Webb Atkinson and Robert Arthur Atkinson in Greenwood, KS. He served in the US Air Force during WWII as well as the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring with 30 years of service. Following his military service, Arthur was employed by ARA Service, Inc, ending his 23 year career as head of food services at Arbor Acres, Winston Salem NC. An active member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church, Arthur served in a number of capacities including lay-leader from 1999-2001, member of the Church Council, and founder of the Stephens Ministry where he served continuously since 1995. Arthur volunteered at the Shepherd's Center and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House. He was a member of Old Town Masonic Lodge, and a life-time member of the American Legion and VFW. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Brock Atkinson, the mother of his children; son Darrell; and second wife Mary Ann Jones Atkinson. Surviving are his loving wife Dorothy Pinkston Atkinson; daughter, Sherrill Dawn Leach (Roger) of Fort Worth, TX; Son Dennis Brock Atkinson (Becky)of Shawnee, KS; stepdaughter, Jennifer Snipes (James) of Yukon OK; and grandchildren, Sara Cooper (Brandon) of Omaha, NE and Samantha Leach of Fort Worth, TX. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 3, 2017, at Maple Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Mahathey officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of the NC Veterans Home Building 10, P.O. Box 599 Salisbury, NC 28145 or Maple Springs United Methodist Church Stephens Ministries, Winston Salem.
