Mr. Arnold Douglas ""Doug"" Smith, 66, of Winston-Salem, the best husband, father, brother, son, and friend the world has ever known completed his journey and went to be with Jesus early Saturday morning at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born September 23, 1945 to the late Arnold Robert and Vesta Johnson Smith of Cole Road, Winston-Salem. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Sprague Street Baptist Church. He was a member of the first graduating class of East Forsyth High School in the year 1963. He did his mechanic apprenticeship at Carolina Garage. Then, Doug worked at Roadway Express Inc. where he retired after 30 years as a journeyman mechanic. Doug was a very unique man. He was the most honest, faithful and pure man anyone ever met. Doug lived a life of humility and never knew how great he truly was. He loved his beautiful wife of almost 46 years; he adored his four girls and cherished his family. He was also blessed to have many lifelong friends who were true friends to Doug until the very end. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Violet Frances Johnson and his brother Donald Gray Smith, and his brother-in-law, Mitchell E. Britt. Surviving are his loving wife Bobbie Sue Britt Smith of the home; four daughters, Rhonda Kilby (John) of Lewisville, Barbara Lewis (Barry) of Kernersville, Sandie Brown (Bob) of Kernersville, and Karen Parris (Shawn) of Winston-Salem; brother, Robert Elwood (Connie) Smith of Kernersville and sisters-in-law Shirley Myers Britt and Betty Marr Smith both of Kernersville; nephews and nieces Randall E. Smith (Martha), Lisa S. Duggins (Wayne), Kimberly F. Britt and Mitchell E. Britt, Jr.; fourteen grandchildren, Stephanie Hodges, Jennifer Kilby Freeman (Tony), Tanner, Douglas Cole, Zachary and Sydnee Kilby, Duncan, Alex, Chandler & Carson Lewis, Ryan & Jordan Brown, Quincy & Simone Parris; five great grandchildren, Isaiah, Hope, Parker, Danielle, & Myles. A Celebration of Doug Smith's life will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Oaklawn Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Branch and Rev. Travis Moses officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. We want to show our tremendous gratitude to all of his many friends especially the Miller, Penry, Sink and Dillow families. Words cannot properly thank them for their love and kindness can never be repaid. We need them to know that their actions were truly reflections of what our Daddy and his life have meant to them. We would also like to say a special thanks to our dear friend Patrick, whom we will always love in a special way. The entire Smith family would like to thank Hospice for treating us like well loved family members for the entire 11 day stay at Hospice in room 13. The entire family was able to spend time together around the clock and that is a gift that Hospice gave us. The family is forever grateful. Memorials may be made in Doug Smith's name to the Kate B.
