Arnold Bruce Lovell was received into the Church Triumphant on Saturday, July 16, 2016. A native of Lexington, NC, he graduated from Lexington Senior High School and Appalachian State University. Arnold taught and coached at West Davidson High School prior to earning a Doctorate in Ministry degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA, and a Doctorate in Education from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, also in Richmond.
As a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Arnold taught polity and evangelism at Union Theological Seminary, served as senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston, WV and Second Presbyterian Church, Knoxville, TN and as an interim pastor for churches in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. He worked for a number of years at the Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly and was an active member of Presbytery. While in Knoxville, he served as chaplain of the Quarterback Club and Tip-Off Club at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and was an avid fan of Tennessee Volunteer athletics. At the time of his passing, Arnold was the Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at South University in High Point.
Arnold is survived by his wife and best friend, Emily Sexton Lovell, whom he called ""the most important woman in the world;"" daughter Carolyn Edmunds Lovell; daughter Catherine Hedrick Lovell and her husband, his son, Randy Andrew Lawson, and grandsons Isiah Richard and Zachery Andrew; and his ""adopted"" son, Hashim Velez. He is also survived by his brother Jerry Wayne Lovell, his wife Patti Peninger Lovell, and his brother Thomas Edward Lovell, and his wife Krista Barger Lovell. He was preceded into the Church Triumphant by his father and mother, James Monroe Lovell and Irene Hedrick Lovell, and his sister, Barbara Paige Lovell Thomason.
Arnold loved cheering his grandsons on in baseball, having ""man day"", and taking them to his favorite place - Sam's Club. He never met a stranger and shared his many God-given gifts by being a pastor, teacher, mentor, and friend to anyone in need. He followed God's call and served Him faithfully, accepting everyone he met as a child of God and friend in Christ, often ""adopting"" the friends of his daughters as his own.
