Arnold Collison Aspden

Mr. Arnold Collison Aspden, 91, of Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born October 15, 1917 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to the late Martin C. and Gertrude Eckersley Aspden. He was a 1940 graduate in Chemical Engineering from N.C. State University. Later he received a Master's degree in Industrial Psychology from N.C. State. After teaching at Hampden-Sydney College in VA, he moved with his family to Winston-Salem. In 1961 he began work in the Personnel Dept. of the City of Winston-Salem. He later became the Personnel Director-a position he held until his retirement in 1979. He enjoyed being a member of the Exchange Club of Winston-Salem and being a bellringer for the Salvation Army at Christmas time. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Tuttle. Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Ruth Nowell Aspden of the home; three daughters, Susan Overstreet and husband Aubrey of Waynesboro, VA, Sara Cooley of Winston-Salem, and Jane Deal and husband James of Richmond, VA; a son, Stephen C. Aspden and wife Marion of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Lisa Graham, Kim McManaway, Catherine Grodensky, Natalie Josef, Ashley Batrouny; and three great-grandchildren.
