LEWIS - WALNUT COVE Mr. Arlen Dudley ""Hammer"" Lewis passed away January 1, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1939 in Stokes County to the late Maude Smith Lewis and Dudley Pleasant Lewis. Mr. Lewis retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 32 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Olivet Moravian Church and sang in the Chancel Choir. Mr. Lewis proudly served 6 years in the National Guard and 4 years at the Vienna Fire Department. His hobbies were gardening, fishing and golf. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Gail Hollar. Surviving are his wife, Betty Lewis of the home; two children, Richard Lewis and wife, Sandy of Winston-Salem and Teresa Steelman and husband, Philip of Lewisville; three granddaughters, Kimberly, Lindsey and Ashley; great-grandson, Russell; brother, Cary Lewis and wife, Mary Bumgarner of Winston-Salem; aunt, Virginia Smith and husband, Clyde of Walnut Cove; nephew, Barry G. Hollar Jr.; and special friend, Martha Soots. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Olivet Moravian Church with the Rev. Doug Rights officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 3 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or Second Harvest Food Bank, 3655 Reed Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.
