Anthony Romanowsky

Mr. Anthony Romanowsky, 87, formerly of Winston Salem, passed away unexpectedly on April 25, 2012 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born February 18, 1925 in Trumbull County, Ohio to the late Peter Romanowsky and Pauline Sahaydak Romanowsky. He was a member of Peace Haven Baptist Church where he was previously a Deacon and sang in the choir with his wife. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1943 - 1946. He played football at North Carolina State where he was an NCAA All-American and Captain of the team in 1950. Mr. Romanowsky was a founding inductee in the Girard Sports Hall of Fame. He received his degree in Textile Chemistry from North Carolina State University and worked for Hanes Dye and Finishing later retiring from High Point Chemical Company. After his retirement he enjoyed making Nantucket ""Lightship"" baskets and volunteering at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He will be missed by his many beloved friends. Mr. Romanowsky was preceded in death by his loving wife, Roma Saunders Romanowsky on January 7, 2012 and his brother Stephen Romanowsky. He is survived by his children, a son, Peter A. Romanowsky (Barbara) of Baton Rouge, LA; two daughters, Jean Romanowsky Ballard (Mike) of Danville, VA and Kathy Romanowsky Hyder (William) of Buffalo, MN; seven grandchildren, Daniel and Zachary Romanowsky, Michael (Adrienne), Stephen (Lindsay), and Robert Ballard, and Katie and Suzanne Hyder; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Ezra Ballard; two sisters, Stella Woytek of Columbus, OH and Marilyn Ben of Girard, OH. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Peace Haven Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Parrish and the Rev. Jay Whitley officiating. Inurnment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Music Department at Peace Haven Baptist Church, 3384 York Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
