Annie Mae Sturdivant Stewart, 86, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2016 while a resident of Mallard Ridge Assisted Living. Born July 30, 1929 to Charlie and Mary Hager Sturdivant, she was the youngest child, preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. She is survived by daughters Lydia Stewart Castle of Atlanta, GA and Gail L. Stambaugh of Winston-Salem. Also surviving her are 3 grandchildren, Corissa Castle Wood, husband Thomas, and children Tommy & Alanna of Atlanta; David Stambaugh, wife Elizabeth, and children Jacob, Nathanael, & Abigail of Apex; and Matthew Stambaugh of Arlington, VA. Affectionately known as ""Granny"" she delighted in achieving the status of grandmother and great-grandmother. Ann moved to Winston-Salem as a young adult but was always proud of the fact that she was born and raised in Yadkin County. After serving 40 years as a sewer at the Hanes Hosiery Weeks Plant and Yadkinville locations of Sara Lee Corporation, she retired in 1994. She was an excellent seamstress, loved working crossword puzzles, and truly possessed a green thumb for growing plants in and around her home. She was also well-known for baking delicious red velvet cakes for family gatherings and reunions. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3771 Yadkinville Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of the Horizons unit of Mallard Ridge Assisted Living for their devoted and loving care of our mother throughout this past year, and to Winston-Salem Hospice for their support during the final chapter of her life.
