Anne Maddrey

Anne Knox Maddrey, 80, died November 14, 2017 at her home after a period of declining health. She was born July 8, 1937 and was the only child of the late Katherine Tillery Knox and John Graham Knox. She was born and raised in Statesville.

Mrs. Maddrey graduated from Statesville High School, Stratford Junior College, and in 1959 received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was student government vice-president at Stratford and was the chaplain for her sorority at UNC, Alpha Gamma Delta.

She met the love of her life while at UNC, and in 1960 she married Thomas Parker Maddrey (https://www.hayworth-miller.com/obituary/TParker-Maddrey) . They celebrated 57 years of marriage this past July. Also surviving are their twin children, Katherine Maddrey Barrier and husband, Daniel of Concord, and Robert Parker Maddrey and husband, Mark K.S. Tulbert of Raleigh; and their grandson, James Robert Barrier of Concord.

Mrs. Maddrey was an elementary school teacher, having taught in the Winston-Salem school system before marriage and in the Rutherford County school system before having children. She taught again in Winston-Salem after her children were older. She was a guide at Old Salem for three years. From 1988 to 1996 she was a counselor and director of Senior Financial Care.

Through the years, she was a volunteer with the schools, a Cub and Girl Scout leader, CONTACT volunteer, and was active in the Forsyth County Mental Health Association, where she received the volunteer of the year award in 1984. She served on the boards of AIDS Care Service and Companion Care Group.

Mrs. Maddrey was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. She was raised in the First Presbyterian Church of Statesville. She had been a member of the Rutherfordton and Highland Presbyterian Churches. In these two churches she served as Bible moderator, president of the Women of the Church, and Presbyterian Women. She received the lifetime membership award from the Highland Presbyterian Women.

Mrs. Maddrey was an avid scrapbook keeper of all the family histories, family gatherings and trips. She enjoyed doing needlework, framed by her husband, and reading was a source of pleasure. She loved to laugh with family and friends. She and her husband enjoyed going to their get-away cottage in the mountains of Ashe County.

Unconditional love and devotion for her husband, children and grandson were the most important joys of her life. Being a homemaker was a source of pride. She treasured the many family pieces left to her care.

The family would especially like to thank long time caregivers, Earline Glenn and Mary Horton, and Hospice and Palliative CareCenter.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Maddrey will be held on Saturday, November 18 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street, Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the Knox family plot, off Sugar Maple Drive in the Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville.
