Mrs. Anna Maria Lewandowski, architect, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving, close-knit family on July 26, 2010. She was born in Krakow, Poland on July 27, 1938 as the youngest of three daughters to the late Stefania Bik Donth and Alfred Donth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ewa Gardzinska. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, John Lewandowski, her daughter Magdalena Lewandowski with her husband Doug Bryant and their daughter Izabella of Falls Church, VA, and her son Simon Lewandowski with his wife Kristi Lewandowski of St. Petersburg, FL. Her surviving family in Poland include her sister, Krystyna Grzybowska of Krakow, her nephew, Piotr Gardzinski, his wife Adrianna and their two daughters, Anna and Marta of Rzeszow. She is also survived by many dear friends on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Mrs. Lewandowski graduated from the Fine Arts High School in Krakow and later The School of Architecture at the Krakow Technical University, with the title of Master of Arts in Architecture and Urban Planning. Her long professional career covered work in Poland, Baghdad, Iraq and the United States. For the last 29 years she worked in partnership with her husband, John, designing a great number of buildings, homes and especially churches in Western North Carolina, mainly in Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Charlotte. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway on Thursday July 29 from the hours of 6:30 to 8:00 pm, at which time there will be a brief scriptural prayer service. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Winston-Salem, 1730 Link Road, on Friday July 30 at 11:00 am with Rev. William Robinson, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park on Yadkinville Road in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be directed to the Building Fund of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 1730 Link Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
