Ann O. Ballard Kuhlman, 90, of Salemtowne, Winston-Salem, died April 27 after a brief illness. Mary Ann O'Donnell was born Oct. 10, 1919 to Charles Francis and Nell Enright O'Donnell of Richmond, Va. She grew up in Richmond and worked in bookkeeping and as a personal assistant. In 1941 she was married to Frank Conley Ballard and they lived in Richmond and Louisville, Ky., before moving to Winston-Salem in 1960 when he began working for Archer Aluminum. After his death in 1966 she became an administrative assistant to the treasurer of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and worked 10 years before retiring. In 1976 she was married to W. Carl Kuhlman, who died in 1989. Mrs. Kuhlman moved to Kernersville in 1993 and to Salemtowne retirement community in 2006. She joined First Presbyterian Church in 1960, was active in a women's Bible study group and taught reading in the Yokefellow prison ministry. She was an active member of the PEO Sisterhood. She loved oil painting, gardening, reading and travel. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Ballard Murray and her husband, Gary M. Murray, of Kernersville; two sons, Frank Conley Ballard, Jr. and his wife, Mary Lou, of Hendersonville; and James Clark Ballard and his wife, Linda, of University City, Mo., whose son Thomas Vance Ballard and his wife Lindsay live in Austin, Texas with their son Zachary Vance Ballard. Her five step-grandchildren are Vicki Murray Cagle of Winston-Salem, Gary M. Murray, Jr. of Gainesville, Ga.; Christina Comrie of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; Sabrina Leibfried, Covington, Ky.; and Melina DePasse, Castle Rock, Co. She had eight step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews including Jan Enright of Mooresville. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made at the donor's discretion. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8 at the Smith Saal, Salemtowne. The family wishes to thank the Salemtowne staff for their hospitality and loving care.
