Winston-Salem - Mrs. Ann Thames Hartis, wife of Frank E. Hartis, Jr., died Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center after a long illness. Ann was born in Richmond, VA to J. W. Thames and Ruth W. Thames. She moved to Durham at an early age. She married Frank, and after he returned from service in Korea they moved to Winston-Salem. Ann was a homemaker and in her earlier years was active in her church and the Heart Association. She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid bridge player. She was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church and Pine Brook Country Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, J.W. Thames, Jr. and H.A. Thames. Surviving, in addition to her husband, Frank, are sons, Frank E. Hartis, III and Mark R. Hartis; daughter-in-law, Leigh Anne Hartis; granddaughter, Taylor Hartis; and sister, Gwen T. Bagby of Fuquay Varina. A memorial service will be held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel on Saturday, November 28 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Paul Mullen officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 27 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church Building Fund, 501 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wishes to thank the staffs at The Oaks at Forsyth, Southfork Assisted Living, and Forsyth Medical Center ICU for their excellent care in Ann's final days.
