Alvin Tew, 70, most recently of Eden, NC, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2022, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. He was born August 21, 1951 in Hopewell, VA to Kathleen Boone Weaver and Paul Tew. Alvin served four years in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear propulsion mechanic. He was a hard worker and proud provider for his family. He spent many years working as a stationary engineer for Stroh’s Brewery, Burroughs Wellcome, and Miller Brewing Company only leaving the workforce when the plant closed. Alvin was active with the Teamsters Local Union 391 during his career. Alvin had a sharp mind, quick wit, and never gave up. He would say, “I don’t have it in me to quit.” He loved quietly and steadily. He didn’t often say ‘I love you’ but instead was your biggest supporter, encouraging, and bragging to others when you weren’t around. He spoke highly of his mama and as a teenager saved his mother’s life helping to bring his younger sister into the world then was given the honor of naming her. He was known amongst his family for his last minute, unplanned travels. He’d show up from many states away with only a few hours notice. Once, he travelled to New Zealand and back on stand-by flights getting “stuck” in Hawaii for a time. Alvin led an active life enjoying softball, water skiing, and snow skiing in his younger years and was a lifelong fisherman. He enjoyed shag dancing and beach music in his later years as a member of the Greater Triad and Winston Salem Shag Clubs. He even won the Rookie Revenge Shag Contest at North Myrtle Beach one time. After retirement, Alvin dedicated time to building a house for his son. He bought each plank of wood and fashioned the railings of the porch from steel rebar himself. Alvin is preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Leon Weaver, a daughter, Holly Tew, and a brother, Eugene Tew. He is survived by his daughter, Crystal Beard, and her husband, Jason, and their two children – Hadley and Ronin – of Camp Lejeune, NC; his son, Jakob Tew, of Eden, NC; his brother, Harold Weaver, and his sister-in-law, Stephanie, of Orange City, FL; his sister, Sheila Weaver Allison, and brother-in-law, Jim, of Hammock Beach, FL; and several cousins, niece and nephews, and friends.
Alvin requested a funeral service not be held but instead to have his ashes spread at the North Carolina beaches. He said anyone who wanted to visit with him could do it there. In lieu of flowers, any donations can be made to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society.
