WINSTON-SALEM, NC--Mr. Alvin Michael Clapp, 84, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Clapp was born on June 15, 1930 in Greensboro, NC to the late Michael L. and Irene Brown Clapp. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He continued his service to the government with a career in the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor, which became the EEOC. Mr. Clapp was a long-time member of Ardmore Baptist Church. His favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing, but more recently he especially enjoyed drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, and watching sports. As a young man, he was a semi-pro baseball player, and his love of baseball continued throughout the rest of his life. His three grandsons were his pride and joy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clapp was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerna B. Clapp. He is survived by his two daughters, Carol Lemke (Steve) of New Orleans, LA and Cathy Byman (Ed) of Raleigh, NC; three grandsons, Austin Lemke of New Orleans, LA, Logan Byman of Gainesville, FL, and Michael Byman of Atlanta, GA. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, May 29, 2015 in the chapel at Ardmore Baptist Church with Rev. Ty Talton and Rev. Christa Warise officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the LaVerna Clapp Scholarship Fund at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 3939 Gentilly Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70126, which supports female missions students and a fund which Mr. Clapp himself supported.
