Mr. Alton ""Doc"" Whitman Greenlaw, 96, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Greenlaw was born on June 30, 1916 in Calais, Maine to the late Eugene B. Greenlaw and Addie Hinckley. He was the youngest of four children. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife whom he married in 1944, Ruby Estelle McCroskey; and his older siblings, Eugene Greenlaw, Hinckley Greenlaw, and Orris Walter. ""Doc"" was a graduate of Stetson University in Deland, FL and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, where he earned Masters and Doctors degrees in theology. Much later, he earned the Master of Social Services from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He retired from the Department of Social Services in Forsyth County and served on numerous civic boards including the Mayor's Committee for Those with Disabilities and the Forsyth Prison Chaplaincy Board. He was an active member of Ardmore Baptist Church. Also, he was an active member of the Twin City Lions Club. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Ardmore Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Ty Talton, Rev. John Hackworth, and Rev. Scott Freese. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Greenlaw Fund of Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the Ruby and Doc Greenlaw Fund to benefit the inmates of Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministries (www.forsythjpm.org), 307 Craft Dr., Winston-Salem, NC.
