Alta "June" Long Hicks

Mrs. Alta “June” Long Hicks, age 95, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023. She was born November 3, 1927, in Forsyth County to the late William Frank Long and Ruth Swain Long.  June has been a devout Christian her entire adult life. She served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher first at Woodland Baptist and was a charter member of North Point Baptist Church where she continued to teach Sunday school for more than 60 years. One of her greatest gifts has been her faith in the Lord and sharing with all.  She worked at Hanes as a young girl and then became a homemaker where she took great joy in caring for her family.  She made extra income as a seamstress and was well known for her cooking especially Sunday dinners.  She is known as “grandmommy” to her beloved grandchildren who have always been her greatest joy and as a dear friend to many. June is preceded in death by her husband Leroy Hicks, and sons Terry and Nelson Hicks, and son-in-law Todd Nelson. She is survived by son David Hicks (Linda) and Daughter Janice Nelson; grandchildren Chris ( Kaytee), Robert (Brittny), Derreck, Leah,  Hannah (Alex), and 12 great-grandchildren Alexis, Ariana, Sydney, Ethan, Brendon, Eli,  Blake, Mason, Millie, Henry, Maggie, Harrison, Julian and 1 soon to be great great grandson.  June is survived by 2 very special sister-in-laws Bonnie and Rachel as well as many nieces and nephews. We will all miss her very much. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with Rev. Skip Furrow and Rev. Jason Fletcher officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park. A special thank you to the Vienna Village staff for all of the wonderful care you all provided to June. In lieu of flowers family, request donations may be sent to North Point Baptist Church: 4980 University Pkwy, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
