Mrs. Alma Rose Barker, 80, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born September 29, 1936 in Louisville, KY, the daughter of the late, Frank X. and Madeline Greenwell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary E. Barker and a grandson, Joshua York. Alma is survived by her husband of 59 years, James E. Barker; her son, Kevin Glenn Barker of Raleigh; her granddaughter, Katrina Barker; her daughter-in-law, Julie Barker; her sister, Janet Carlin; her brother-in-law, Tony Carlin and four nieces. Before coming to Winston-Salem, she graduated from Loretta Catholic High School in Louisville, KY. She was married in 1957 and moved to Winston-Salem in 1970. She was a longtime member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church where she served in the ladies St. Theresa Guild. She worked as a Cub Scout Leader for a number of years and delivered Meals on Wheels for about 30 years. She and another lady were founders of the local chapter of the ""Right to Life"" organization. Most important she was above all a devoted, caring, loving, wife, mother and friend. Her smile will carry us through this and into the future. We wish to thank the many wonderful caring nurses and staff at Novant Hospital Acute Palliative Care Unit. They could not have given Alma and her family any better care. Barbara Goldsmith NP was the most caring competent person we could have asked for. Hospice & Palliative Care Center holds a very special place in our hearts. What can you say about them when they are so perfect on both patient and family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 11:00 AM with Father Brian Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 4, 2017 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Chapel.
