WINSTON-SALEM-Mrs. Allie Merritt Lawing, 95, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 11, 2013. Some family members were by her side. Born on December 5, 1917 in Forsyth County to John and Mamie Pendry Merritt, Allie was a lover of life and all that it offered. Her wisdom and insight will be missed. She was a loving wife of 67 years to her husband, Alvin after meeting him as a pen pal during WWII. Trained in nursing, Allie was a caregiver to many. She was a gifted quilt maker, porcelain artist, story teller, guitar player, and the eldest member of South Fork Baptist Church. She was a wonderful, loving mother to her 3 sons, Harold, ""Skipper"" and Steve. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, a son, Harold, her parents; sisters, Etta Seivers, Clara VanHoy, Mary Anderson, and Margaret Wyatt; her brothers, Charles, June, Jack, Simon, Edgar, and John Merritt. She is survived by her sons, Alvin Trice Lawing, Jr. ""Skip"" of NYC and Steve Lawing of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Merritt Lawing; two grandsons, Dustin Hunter and Chris Roth; one sister, Ruby Scism; several great-grandchildren and scores of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Monday, May 13, 2013 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to South Fork Baptist Church, 3830 Wayne Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
