Alley George Pop" Nelson, Sr.

Mr. Alley George ""Pop"" Nelson, Sr. age 82 of Winston-Salem died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Pop was born in Stokes County, August 30, 1926 to the late George Henderson and late Ally Nelson Nelson. He was a member of Northwoods Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and a veteran of the United States Air Force. In addition to his parents, Pop was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Nelson and two brothers; Albert and Roscoe Nelson. Surviving are his three daughters; Vickie (David) Daetwyler, Sherrie (Rick) Comer and Wanda (Mike) Boyles. Seven sons; Alley George, Jr. (Brenda) Nelson, Tully Hicks, Ronnie (Paula) Nelson, Norman (Kim) Nelson, Roman (Lisa) Nelson, Mark (Susan) Nelson and Brian (Sara) Nelson. Eighteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A sister; Sarah Pulliam, Two brothers; Roger (Petey) Nelson and Joe (Carol) Nelson and also honorary grandchildren Saul Armengol and Eduardo Juarez. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Northwoods Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Jim Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with military burial rites conducted by the King American Legion Post 290. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 12:00 noon until time of the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to extend a special thanks to his wonderful caregivers at Universal Health Care in King, his church family at Northwoods Baptist Church and Palliative Care at Forsyth Hospital. Also a special thank you to a very special friend, Peg Sidden.
