A kind, decent and interesting man, Allen Challie Wood, died of respiratory illness on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a fine, notable and dedicated musician. Born in Forsyth County in 1948 to Challie Marvin Wood and Emily Franklin. Al's memory will remain in the heart of his many loved ones. Although Al left behind three children, he was always proud to say that he raised seven, and he never distinguished bloodlines among them. Al Wood loved them all fairly and gently. He is survived by those children, his namesake, Allen C. Wood, Jr. (Anne), Mandy Wood, Stacy Schoening (Rebecca), Paul Roddey, DeAnne Roddey, Robin Taylor, Robert Taylor and Peter Ray Roddey. Also surviving are Al's former wife, Marsha Wood; a devoted sister, Donna Travers; nieces, Rebecca Travers, Rachel Travers; and nephew, Joshua Travers; his Aunt Ivy, Linda Shoening; and cousins, Todd and Jerry Cardwell. Also mourning this loss are: grandchildren, Allen Challie Wood III, Emily Wood, Arien Jones, Eden Wood, Stephanie Tudor, Keyaira West, Zachary Taylor, Marshall Taylor, and Bradley Smith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Emily Bostic; brother, Johnny Wood; father, Challie Wood; grandmother, Alma Webster; son, Michael Taylor; and friend, Eric Hester. Big Al was known as a very talented musician. He was particularly proud of his years with The Swingin' Medallions and of their 1965 hit, Double Shot of My Baby's Love. His dear friends Jimmie Vestal, Frank Morton, brothers Matt and Mark Necessary, Kevin Worley, Robbie Carlisle, âWild Bill' Cooksey, John Hayes, Steve Moss, Bobby Bennett. We all wish Al godspeed and expect to meet again. He was a father to so many. A graveside service will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, May 13th at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Frank Shumate officiating. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
