Alice Shackelford, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2025.
She was born in Forsyth Co. on December 30, 1938, to the late Elizabeth Fishel Walser and Fred James Walser Sr.
After graduating from Gray High School in 1957, Alice began her career at McLean Trucking, where she worked her way up to become a supervisor over the key punch department. She truly enjoyed her work there. After the birth of her son Doug, she became a devoted stay-at-home mom. Later, during Doug’s high school years, she would drive him to school in Durham and pick him up at the end of the week—a commitment she embraced with love and dedication. She was a lifetime member of Trinity Moravian Church, where she was baptized and found great joy and community throughout her life.
Alice enjoyed going to craft shows and took great pride in tending to her roses and flowers in the backyard. She and her husband Ronald cherished their trips to the Outer Banks, where they spent the months of May and October for many years. They always welcomed friends to stop by and fish with them. Alice would start packing months in advance to make sure everything was just right for those trips.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 50 years, Ronald Shackelford; and two very special lifelong friends, Margaret Reid and Betty Jo Sluder.
Alice is survived by her son, Douglas Shackelford and his wife Julia of Graham, NC; her brother, Fred J. Walser Jr. and his wife, Linda; her brother-in-law, Jerry Shackelford and his wife, Carol, of Jacksonville, Florida; and many beloved nephews and their wives.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who provided care and support during Alice’s final days. Your kindness and compassion will always be remembered. The family would also like to thank the Rev. Bill McElveen for his constant support and faithful visitation through the years.
