Alice Mae Chapman Johnson of Winston-Salem, NC passed away Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, GA.
She was born March 14, 1926 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Pearl Arney Chapman and Fred Newton Chapman. A year after her birth the family moved to Battle Creek, Michigan where she spent her youth growing up through the depression. In early 1945 while working at Kellogg Air Field Alice met the love of her life, Paul Rights Johnson. They were married on December 15th of that same year and moved to Winston-Salem, NC. Alice lived at the home she and Paul built for 60 years but after the diagnosis of a life limiting illness, she spent her final days at the Hospice House where her daughter worked in Georgia.
Alice was known for her love of God, her family, and her church. Alice and Paul were instrumental in forming Konnoak Hills Moravian Church which was within walking distance of their home and became charter members. Alice enjoyed knitting and crocheting, playing bridge or any card game, and was a wonderful cook. She was always ready to help at the church or anywhere in the community when someone needed a ride or a meal. She was preceded in death by her husband, and survived by a son, Tom F. Johnson of High Point and his wife, Ann, and a daughter, Maryalice J. Kimel and her husband, Larry, of St. Simons Island, GA and a brother, Allen Chapman of Battle Creek, MI. She had 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, June 18th at Konnoak Hills Moravian Church. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Konnoak Hills Moravian Church, 3401 Konnoak Drive, Winston-Salem, NC, 27127.
