Alfred Jennings Hammons, Sr.

Mr. Alfred Jennings Hammons, Sr., 92, of Kernersville, passed away Tuesday morning, January 3, 2012 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born May 4, 1919 in Forsyth County to Franklin Pierce and Amanda Hunter Hammons. He was a former employ of HJ Hines and retired from Hanover Food Companies, working for those companies for 21 years. He was also owner of Ham's Used Furniture. He served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was an active Gideon for many years and Acolythe of Immanuel-New Eden Moravian Church. Al was a friend to everyone who knew him. He would not only be there for all of us, but would make countless donations to Sunnyside Ministries, Good Will Industries, the Salvation Army, and many other outreach organizations in our town. Al met and married the love of his life, Violet Humphries on July 13, 1943. They were married for over 57 years until her passing in 2000. Also preceding him in death are three brothers, Hunter, Forest, and Curtis Hammons; and a sister, Virginia Vaughn. Surviving are his son, Alfred Hammons, Jr. of Walterboro, SC; a sister, Colleen Whicker; a brother, Bob Hammons and wife Linda of Lewisville; nieces and nephews, Libby Cates and husband Barry, Ben Humphries and wife Patricia, Susan Marshall, Rodney Whicker, Sharon Davis, Camilla Lewellyn, Norma Vaughn, and Steve Hammons; special friends, Dr. Luke and Judy Hallman of Spartanburg, SC and their sons, Luke Hallman, Jr. of Columbia, SC and Andrew Lowe of Charleston, SC; and many other loving friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 5 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Cheryl G. Cottingham and the Rev. Robert M. Peek, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
