Alene Lane Paul

Mrs. Alene Lane Paul, 79, of Clemmons passed away Saturday August 24, 2013 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the 6th of 8 children born to Homer Burton Lane and Vannie Canfield Lane on August 28, 1933 in Parcoal, West Virginia, a true coal miner's daughter. She was a graduate of Webster Springs High School, class of 1951. In August of 1956 she married the love of her life Dr. Charles L. Paul, and a new adventure began. As a military wife she traveled the globe living in various states from Alaska to Georgia and Europe. She served as a volunteer in the American Red Cross, and as Vice President of the Officers' Wives Club in Heidelberg Germany. Here she was responsible for various charitable and service oriented functions. She took advantage of the opportunities of location to see the world from skiing the Alps, visiting America's great National Parks, and cruising the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas. An avid bowler, she accomplished many bowling patches. In 1979, when her husband retired from the military, she set up home in Clemmons NC. She attended First Presbyterian Church in Winston Salem, and became active in the Prime Timers and a women's group who called themselves the ""Wild Bunch"". She sponsored children in the Dominican Republic and supported other charitable organizations: one of her favorites being the Clemmons Food Pantry. She is preceded in death by her parents, daughters Linda Diane and Terri Ann, brothers Homer B Lane Jr. and Gerald Lane. Alene is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Charles L. Paul, her daughters Cathy Phelps and husband Steve, and Karen Faske and husband Joe all of Clemmons. Also surviving are 2 brothers, Harold Lane, Richard Lane and wife Sue, 3 sisters Athlea Lane, Carol Jackson and husband Jim, Sharon Poe, and a host of nieces and nephews. She ardently loved and cared for her family, but the light of her life and most precious joys were her grandchildren: Andrew Phelps and wife Stacy, Brian Phelps, Zach Faske, Sarah Faske, and Caitlin Phelps. On many a weekend she could be found at a basketball, baseball, or soccer game, tennis match, dance or gymnastic recital. She was an integral part of their lives and through her grandchildren became loved and known as Mam-ma Paul to their friends and neighbors. A memorial service will be conducted by Reverend Amy Carlan of First Presbyterian Church at 2 PM Saturday August 31, 2013 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 300 North Cherry Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or the Clemmons Food Pantry.
