Alberta “Bert” Medlin Harpe, 92, passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at Heritage Woods Assisted Living.

Bert was born on May 21, 1929 in Forsyth County to the late Percy Bryan Medlin and Ila Pittman Medlin.

She was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church where she participated in the Women’s Circle and was a chicken pie worker, making hundreds of chicken pies for the church. Bert also enjoyed making Afghan blankets and Jesus signs for friends and church members.  She was a volunteer for Sunnyside Ministries and drove herself and other volunteers to deliver Moravian lambs to shut-ins. Bert kept herself very active and continued to drive to her local gym and exercise a few times a week, even into her 90s.

Bert met her husband John Harpe, Jr. while playing softball during her high school years and they shared 60 years of marriage.  They enjoyed many trips together over the years, including picnics and drives through the countryside.  Bert was a loving wife and a devoted caregiver to John during his illness before he passed away in 2009.

In addition to her parents and husband, Bert was preceded in death by seven siblings; and a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Ann Matlock.

Surviving family includes her two children, Dr. Keith Gray Harpe (Susan) of Raleigh and Lisa H. Collins (John) of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Krystal Matlock and Steven Harpe; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Braedyn Matlock; one brother, Bill Medlin of Walkertown; and one sister, Pearle Welch of Louisiana.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 1:00 PM at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, with The Rt. Rev. Sam Gray officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church from 12:30 – 1:00 PM prior to the service. Inurnment will immediately follow the service in the church columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Philadelphia Moravian Church Lamb Ministries, 4440 Country Club Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
