Albert Loren Phillips

Albert Loren Phillips, 92, of Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014. He was born May 9, 1921, in Springfield, MA to Harold and Mildred Miller Phillips. Mr. Phillips graduated from Dalton High School in 1940. He joined the U.S. Navy on July 21, 1942, and was discharged on December 4, 1945. Mr. Phillips served active duty for 3 years and retired from the Naval Reserves after more than 20 years. He served during WWII in North Africa, Mediterranean, and European Theatre of operation on LST 29. Mr. Phillips made 26 round trips between England and the Normandy Beach Heads, which were Utah, Omaha, and Gold Beach. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day two hours after the attack. For a year he operated from England to France making round trips every 36 hours, carrying 1500 troops and 70 vehicles to LeHarve, Cherbourg, and invasion beaches. One of his duties was to bring back some of the first bodies and prisoners to England. He was a motor machinist on a 5-man engine room crew operating V-12 diesels, two shafts and port and starboard engines. During battle conditions, he served as a gun captain on a forward 40mm gun. Mr. Phillips received the WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, European African Theatre Medal, two Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Phillips married Anne Pshenishny in 1948. He graduated from American International College in Springfield, MA with a degree in Business Administration. He received his Masters Degree from Springfield College. Mr. Phillips moved to Milford, CT in 1955, as director of New Haven Safety Council. In Milford, he served as an Alderman of the 5th District for 8 years. He later worked for the American Gas Company in New York and moved with the company to Virginia in 1970 and bought a home in Vienna, VA. He always wanted to work in Washington, D.C. and in March of 1972, he went to work for the Department of Labor (OSHA) retiring in January 1987. Three years ago he moved to Winston-Salem, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Phillips. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Anne Phillips; two daughters, Ann Evonne Hansen (Greg) of Ladera Ranch, CA and Patti Peacock (Jim) of Winston-Salem; one son, A. Loren Phillips (Dougie) of Richmond, VA; 6 grandchildren, Tyler and Matthew Hansen; Jeff ,Todd and Brittany Peacock, Katy and A. Loren Phillips III; great-grand children, Danica and Erik Hansen, Parker and Crews Peacock.
