A. Stanley Cross, Jr., age 100 passed away on May 16, 2021 in Colfax, NC. “Stan” aka “Grampie” was born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 9, 1920 to Albert Stanley Cross, Sr. and Dorothy Ramspott Cross. Stan was the oldest of three children and was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor and brother, Bill. He grew up primarily in Mansfield, Mass. and attended Brown University where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1942. While working for G.E., he was recruited to work on the secret Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tenn. in 1944. He worked on uranium enrichment and met his future wife, Anna Brown, also employed at Oak Ridge. At the end of WWII, they married in Sept. 1945 before moving to Pittsfield, Mass. He spent most of his career working for Englehard Industries as a metals specialist in brazing, sales manager, and ultimately, production plant manager. Stan and Ann raised their four children in New Jersey and were transferred to N. Attleboro, Mass. in 1972. They retired in 1986 when they relocated to Charleston, SC. Stan and Ann enjoyed 56 years of marriage and many wonderful years at Cape Cod and Charleston until Ann’s death in 2002. In 2011, Stan moved to RiverLanding in Colfax, NC to be closer to family due to declining vision. Throughout his life, Stan was an avid reader of history and a family genealogist. He also enjoyed many other hobbies including stamp collecting, bird watching, sailing, boating, hiking, and nature photography. He was an enthusiastic supporter and active participant in both his children’s and grandchildren’s activities and college educations. Stan was preceded in death by his wife Ann; daughter, Carol Polega; son, Stan III; and grandson, David Cross II. He is survived by his daughter, Ellen (Kevin) Wilson; son, David (Tammy) Cross; daughter-in-law Dianne Cross; son-in-law Bernard Polega (Lili); grandchildren Jeff (Victoria) and Doug (Marie) Polega; Stan IV (Stacy) and Elizabeth Cross; Matt (Sarah) and Dan (Jill) Wilson; Casey (Warren) Amarnek, and Carly (Spencer) Disque, as well as thirteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Stan treasured his family activities and spearheaded family Thanksgiving gatherings for more than 25 years. The family will honor Stan with a private Celebration of Life in Charleston, SC during Thanksgiving 2021.
