Alan Leighton Andrews (87), devoted husband to Mim Andrews (November 17, 2014 would have been their fifty-eighth anniversary); beloved father to his daughter, Laurie Andrews-Lester (Don) and adored Papa to his granddaughters, Brittany and Annaleigh Lester, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2014. He was predeceased by his parents Lillian and Harold Andrews, his sister, Jane Mack, and his brother, Richard Andrews. He is survived by his brother, Norman Andrews, his sister, Doris Rumsey, seventeen nieces and nephews, and numerous grand and great nieces and nephews.
Al grew up in Albany, New York, and retired to North Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Russell Sage College evening division while working for New York Telephone Company. He worked as a Central Office Design Engineer, retiring in 1982. While there, he went on special assignment with Western Electric to Viet Nam to develop the wartime communications systems. He enjoyed daily, lunchtime duplicate bridge games with his brother, Norm and their colleagues.
Al was devoted to his family. He took every opportunity to show them how much he loved them. He enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and travelling with his wife, Mim, taking trips to Europe, Australia, the Caribbean and Hawaii. His daughter, Laurie, was Daddy's girl, and she cherished all of their special talks, ski trips and projects. He was so proud of his granddaughters Brittany and Annaleigh, and they loved him, and the time they got to spend together.
Faith was a major part of Al's life. He attended church faithfully, most recently Clemmons Presbyterian Church. Through the years he served as both an Elder and a Deacon. He sang in church choirs for over seventy years of his life, passing on his musical talents to his daughter, and granddaughters.
In his younger years, Al was quite an athlete, playing high school football, as well as being an avid snow and water skier. More recently he excelled in shuffleboard, a staunch Andrews family tradition. He also enjoyed weekly BINGO games, both as a player and caller.
Al was known for his generous spirit, and used his many talents to help others. In his younger years he was both a ski instructor and ski patrol. He was also as an honorary member of his daughter's Girl Scout troops, affectionately being known by the girls as Alice. A favorite post-retirement activity for Al was playing Santa Claus, at Clifton Country Mall. He was a volunteer with the Red Cross, and donated frequently through their blood drives. Since moving to North Carolina he was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army at Christmas. He was a proud veteran (Army) and was involved with the VFW in North Carolina.
Al had a wonderful sense of humor, was a loyal friend, and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He will be missed by all who were blessed to know him. He will be forever in our hearts.
A memorial service for Alan will be held on December 28, 2014 at 1:30, at Clemmons Presbyterian Church, 3930 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Building Fund, Clemmons Presbyterian Church.
