William Scurry, Sr.

Mr. William Cooper Scurry, Sr., passed away unexpectedly though peacefully October 25, 2018. He was born October 18, 1946 to Mary and Claude Scurry of Reidsville, NC. Bill was proud to have been born at City Hospital in Winston-Salem and lived in Winston-Salem for the past 49 years. Bill graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1968. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi. In May of 1969 he married his childhood sweetheart, Judy Paulette Newton. Bill began work at Wachovia in Winston-Salem in 1969.  He began his career as a financial advisor soon thereafter at Financial Programs and stayed with his firm as it changed from Reynolds Securities to Dean Witter to Morgan Stanley. He dedicated over 40 years of his life to helping his clients achieve financial success. He was a member of the United States Army Reserve from 1968-1974 and Centenary United Methodist Church where he and Judy raised their two children. Bill was an avid golfer and enjoyed making sure he had reached over 10,000 steps each night before calling it a day. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren.  He recently loved being at his grandchildren’s activities. He absolutely loved cheering for the Tar Heels during both basketball and football seasons. Bill was preceded in death by his sister Julianne West. He is survived by his wife, Judy Scurry; his two children, Cooper Scurry (Cherryel Scurry) and Wendy Scurry Frady (Bryan Frady); grandchildren, William Scurry III, Winston Scurry, Campbell Scurry, Millie Scurry, Henry Frady and Gunnar Frady; sister Bonnie Nelson; nieces Jaime Eagan and Missy Nelson; nephew Kevin Scott Engstrom; mother-in-law Camilla Daniels. A memorial service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem on Thursday November 1, 2018 at 2:00 pm. The family will have a reception following the service.
