Mr. Paul Wesley Sechrest, 92, died on January 7, 2019, after a long, full life. He was born in Winston-Salem on August 5, 1926 to Arthur Lee and Lucy Buckner Sechrest. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings. Paul graduated from Gray High School and Draughon’s Business College. He served in the US Navy 1945-1947.
Throughout Paul’s life he had a growing faith in Jesus Christ, and as he got older, he frequently expressed thankfulness for his many blessings. He was fun-loving and had a great sense of humor. Paul is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth (Lib) Kiger Sechrest, a daughter Susan Sechrest, a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Dawn Sechrest, two beloved grandchildren Elizabeth and William Sechrest, a sister Rozella Sechrest Pettigrew, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond. He is also survived by a dedicated friend Louise Hepler.
Paul’s favorite role in life was Pop Pop to Elizabeth and William. Each year he counted down the days until the family Thanksgiving cruise; he never missed a basketball game, dance recital, Christmas pageant or academic match for Elizabeth or William. Paul was very engaging with people, told great stories and had a very sharp mind until the end. He loved eating out around Winston-Salem for both the food and the fellowship. Paul was very kind and generous in many ways.
Paul had his own accounting firm with close friend Ed Higgins for over forty years. He enjoyed his clients and spoke of them fondly over the years. During his working years, he was frequently seen at breakfast at Krispy Kreme and lunch at K & W Cafeteria. Paul was known by many and loved by all who knew him.
A funeral service to celebrate Paul’s life will be conducted by Rev. Lisa Tanico and Rev. Terry Moore on Thursday, January 10, 1:00 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church at 2350 Bethel Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC, 27103, with burial following at Bethel United Methodist Church, 7553 NC 66 Highway South, King, NC, 27021. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Parkway. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC, 27103, The Centers for Exceptional Children, 2315 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC, 27106, or to either church.
