Myrtle Moody

Myrtle Lee Moody, 96, of Pawleys Island, S.C., went to Heaven February 9, 2019.

She was born August 13, 1922, to Bertha (Adolph) and William Maas in Manhattan, Kansas.  She began work as a secretary after graduating from high school, and eventually moved to Colorado Springs to work at Peterson Airfield, where she met David Moody, a career officer in the Air Force.  They married in 1944 and had two daughters.

Myrtle Lee was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and worked part time to help put her daughters through college.  She also worked as a volunteer dental assistant and went through American Red Cross first aid training.  She often worked at the polls during elections, was active in the Republican Party, and served on the board of directors of Watauga County Hospital in Boone, N.C.

Increasingly, her most important pursuits involved helping her church.  (She credited her Aunt Ida for making sure she and her sister, June, became Christians.)  She volunteered helping children read at St. John’s Lutheran school in Winston–Salem, N.C., worked on the altar guild, and provided many hours to fund-raisers.

Always busy, Myrtle Lee also pursued pleasures such as golf, bowling, flower arranging, needlepoint, playing bridge, cooking and entertaining, not to mention many visits to her daughters and their families.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandi McBride (Loren) of Surfside Beach, S.C., and Carol Edwards (Jonathan) of Hanover, N.H.; her grandchildren Brett and Kevin Wilburn and Joanna Edwards Wert; her sister June Davis; great-grandchildren Baylee and Caleb Wilburn; and nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, and siblings Lois, Victor and Harry.

The family sends heartfelt thanks to the loving staff of the skilled nursing unit of the Lakes at Litchfield, for their care of Myrtle Lee in her last years.

The memorial service will be held at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, Garden City, S.C., at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 14.  Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 16 at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, N.C.
