Marcia Peterson Weyel, 69, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at the Meridian Center in High Point, NC. Marcia was born in Warren, PA to Gilbert David Peterson and Helen Gebhardt Peterson. She graduated from Warren Area High School in 1967. Her early employment was spent as an executive secretary at Loranger’s Corporation in Warren, PA. In 1980, she moved to Edinboro, PA to pursue an undergraduate degree at the age of 31. Marcia graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Education in 1984, then continued her studies at the same institution for a Master’s degree in Special Education in 1986. She taught in Pennsylvania for several years, then moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina where she worked as a special education teacher at several local schools, touching the lives of so many children. Marcia’s spirit to help others then led her in a new direction, this time to pursue a nursing degree. She graduated from Watts School of Nursing in Durham, NC, in 1994. She then entered the nursing profession, working at numerous facilities, including Alamance Regional Hospital, UNC Hospitals, the Carol Woods Retirement Center in Chapel Hill, and at the Butner State Mental Hospital. Marcia finally retired in 2009, after a long career devoted to helping people of all ages. Her work years were spent serving others, including the most difficult special needs children, handicapped and disabled individuals, and those with complex behavioral health needs.
Marcia had a gregarious nature, and truly never met a stranger. She was happiest when surrounded by her family, and enjoyed many family beach vacations at Ocean Isle, NC. She had a gentle and kind soul, and had great appreciation for flowers, gardens, and many beloved pets over the years. She truly cherished her time spent at her mother’s cottage, Helen’s Haven, on the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania. She also held a very dear and special place in her heart for her three grandchildren. Marcia is survived by her son, Michael Lauffenburger and wife, Polly, of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren Daniel, David, and Christy; and a host of siblings, nieces, and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Lewisville, NC, on January 19, 2019 at 2:00 pm. Pastor David Beaty of River Oaks Community Church will officiate the service. The family will have a visitation at the funeral home directly after the service. In lieu of flowers, please direct any donations to the Humane Society of Forsyth County.
