James "Jim" Melton

Mr. James “Jim” Eli Melton, 78, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at his home. Jim was born August 19, 1944, in Surry County to the late Vivian Junior “VJ” Melton and Nellie Hundley Melton. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He retired as a locomotive engineer from the Winston-Salem Southbound Railway after 32 years of service. Jim enjoyed spending time in the mountains especially working on his farm in Pipers Gap, VA. He had a passion for hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandson, Austin Eli Melton, and three brothers. He is survived by his loving wife, Judith “Judy” Chilton Melton; three children, Sherri Woodall (Chris), Ricky Melton (Pam), and Dwayne Melton; four grandchildren, Erin Kotlyn, Ryan Melton (Katie), Jessica Melton, and Tyler Melton; four great-grandchildren, Madison Rissew, Reid Melton, Oliver Kotlyn, and Rylee Melton; and several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be conducted 11:00AM Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with Pastor Greg Hall officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
