After a four-year struggle with dementia, Dwight “Davis” Thompson, Jr., died peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at Life Care Center in Banner Elk, NC. He was 78 years old and will be remembered fondly for his warm, gregarious nature, kindness, and notorious sense of humor.
Davis was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and spent the majority of his life in Rural Hall, NC. Through decades as a choir member, Sunday School teacher at Kingswood United Methodist Church, and years as an Eagle Scout with scout troop 914, he fostered a love for service to his community and a devotion to all his fellow human beings.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science from Wake Forest University, he began a career in education at Walkertown Middle School. This passion for education led him to receive Masters degrees from Appalachian State University and Indiana University before returning to serve as a school psychologist for the Winston Salem/Forsyth Country School System.
Preceded in death by his parents, Dwight D. Thompson Sr. and Elizabeth Grubbs Thompson, Davis is survived by the mother of his children, Sheran Thompson; their son, Brian Thompson and his wife Lisa; their daughter, Amy Chang; and his five grandchildren: Brianna and William Thompson and Maggie, Max, and Molly Chang.
His friends and family would like to thank the care providers at Life Care Center in Banner Elk, NC who always supported Davis with the most compassionate and respectful care.
A memorial service will be held at Kingswood United Methodist Church in Rural Hall, NC on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 7PM. Music will begin at 6:30PM. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial offerings may be sent to Kingswood United Methodist Church.
