Mr. Carl Evan Hanlon, Sr., 83, of West Jefferson passed away Sunday March 3, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health. He was born January 19, 1936 in Star, NC, the son of the late Perry Orville “P.O.” Hanlon, Sr. and Ruby Jane Morris Hanlon. He was a graduate of Star High School. Following graduation from High School he joined the U. S. Air Force retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) after a career of 20 years. During his career in the Air Force, he served in locations such as Texas, Newfoundland, Florida, Vietnam, Korea, North Carolina, Alaska and Nebraska. After retiring from the Air Force, he began a career in civilian healthcare. He worked for 20 years at Medical Park Hospital in Winston-Salem and another four years for what is now Novant Healthcare retiring January 1, 1998. Prior to moving to West Jefferson, he was very active in church activities for the First United Church of Christ in Winston-Salem where he served in many capacities, such as Tape Ministry, Building Maintenance, Personnel Committee, member of the Consistory on numerous occasions and in the Men’s Brotherhood. In West Jefferson he was a member of the Ashe Services for Aging Foundation Board and attended Warrensville United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Judy Jordan Hanlon, who was his best friend and soul mate; four children from his previous marriage, Carl Hanlon, II and wife, Denise of Winter Park, FL, Keith Hanlon and wife Tana of Carthage, NC, Kevin Hanlon and wife, Denise of Winston-Salem, NC and Kimberly H. Allison and husband, James of Kernersville, NC; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; one sister, Nancy Cook of Morehead City; a number of special nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe and Lu Ann Boles of Winston-Salem, NC. A military graveside service will be conducted Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Masonic Children’s Home, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565 or the Masonic and Eastern Star Home, 700 South Holden Road, Greensboro, NC 27407.
