Mrs. Barbara Sue Bennett Freeman, 80, of Winston-Salem born April 1, 1938 passed away March 21, 2019 after a short illness. Barbara graduated from Hanes High School in 1956. An athlete and musician, she played speedball, basketball, softball, tennis, volleyball, the piano, clarinet and enjoyed dancing. In 1959, Barbara graduated from City Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and on December 2, 1961, she married John William Freeman Jr. of Seattle, Washington. She raised three children while pursuing her nursing career, first as a private nurse and then as a psychiatric nurse at Forsyth Hospital. Never far from a good cup of coffee, Barbara was a joy to spend time with, listening to her many stories about life, family and friends. Barbara is remembered for her unwavering love and support to all she knew. Her happiest moments were spending time with her family, friends, and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, music and collard greens. She is predeceased by her husband John, parents Clarence Oliver and Annie Bennett, brother Kent Bennett and sister Joann Luther. She is survived by her children Erik Freeman (Sara March), John Freeman (Cathy), and Wendy Freeman Davis. Grandchildren Bennett & Kate Freeman and Taylor & Kelsey Davis; Sister-in-law Louvene Cooper (Carlos); Brother-in-law David Luther, many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and her beloved dog Darwin. A memorial service honoring her life will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, March 30th at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Chapel, 3315 Silas Creek Pkwy, Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or SPCA of the Triad.
