Frances Louise Griffith Howell, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on November 16, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, to Dr. Earle G. Griffith and Effie Louise Ward Griffith. She grew up in Erie, PA and Manhattan, New York, before moving to Winston-Salem in 1950, when her father became the Vice President of Piedmont Bible College. Louise graduated from RJ Reynolds High School in 1951. After graduating from high school, she attended Piedmont Bible College and graduated in 1955 with a BA in Religious Education. She continued her education at Guilford College where she received a BA in English after which she attended UNC-Greensboro where she completed MA in English. She began her teaching career in 1957 at Salem Christian School and went on to teach at Walkertown Elementary School, Edgewood Christian School and ended her teaching career at Gospel Light Christian School in 1988. After retirement from teaching, she worked for six years with the City of Winston-Salem's Workforce Development department. On June 1, 1957 she married Thurman Francis Howell whom she was married to for 56 years. Lou had a great love for music and served as organist at Twin City Baptist Church for 32 years. She had a love for ministering to children and taught Sunday School for more than 30 years. Lou was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Raymond, Charles, and Thomas Griffith; and by her son, Timothy Dale Howell in 2011. She is survived by her husband, Thurman; and son, Keith Gordon Howell and his wife, Cynthia of Winston-Salem; and two granddaughters, Michelle Howell Hancock and husband Kenny of Huntersville, NC; Christen Howell Thompson, husband, John of Mooresville, NC; four grandsons, Jason K. Howell and wife Angie of Chicago, IL; Joshua R. Howell and wife Catherine of Greenville, NC, Timothy Blair Howell, and Collin Jacob Howell of Huntersville, NC; three great grandchildren, Gracie Elizabeth Thompson, Emma Grace Howell and Kenneth Whitman Hancock, III ""Tripp""; four sisters-in-law; as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Lou will be held at 4:30 PM, Friday, July 12, 2013 at North Point Baptist Church, 4980 University Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC with Pastor Skip Furrow and Rev. Douglas Couch officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Point Baptist Church.
